Research interests:

I am an environmental/analytical chemist with a background in marine chemistry as well. My main areas of research interest are bioaccumulation of environmental pollutants in Arctic marine and limnic food webs. Another area of interest is how climate change affects environmental processes that are important for understanding the fate and occurrence of contaminants in the Arctic. I have used enantiomer selective analyses to understand more about transfer and fate of pesticides in Arctic waters.

I am involved in assessments and reports for Arctic Monitoring Assessment Programme (AMAP) as well, focusing on emerging contaminants and combined effects of climate change and persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

Scientific diving is a tool I use as much as possible in my research. Certain experiments and sampling cannot be achieved without diving. Other techniques for sampling organic pollutants are passive sampling (water) that is a very useful way of taking samples in the Arctic.

Calanus population genomics across the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean.

PhD project description:

At the basis of ecosystems in North Atlantic and Artic, Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus glacialis are planktonic copepods whose role is fundamental for the food webs as it feeds secondary consumers. Given that very little is known about species boundaries and genetic structure, it is crucial to study the impact of global warming on Calanus populations. Identifying the genetic structure and the phylogeography/historical demography can help us understand and predict the response of populations to future changes.

I am using new technologies of sequencing to study the genomics of Calanus populations. Sequence capture enrichment technic enables me to select only specific parts of the genome and to assess its content in Single Nucleotide Polymorphism markers (SNPs). Indicators of the diversity, these markers will allow me defining populations’ structure. Then, I want to investigate the stability of populations over the time, and potential effects of selection. Moreover, since it has been suggested, and given the overlap of distribution and reproductive period of both species, I will figure out whether Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus glacialis are able to interbreed, and hybridize. Last point, I am interested in studying the mitogenome of Calanus species to build a new phylogeny based on NGS data, and to realize a phylogeography based on mitochondrial DNA.
