PhD project title:

Life at the Edge – Mytilus in the high Arctic

Project description:

During the early Holocene, Mytilus spp. likely played an important role as members of the subtidal hard bottom community around Svalbard. They were present around the archipelago until at least 1000y ago, and presumably disappeared from the area due to direct and indirect effects of the cooling climate. In 2004 discovered Berge et al. a few small blue mussel specimen in Isfjorden, Svalbard. Ever since, more and more findings have revealed the come back of Mytilus spp. to the high North. The bivalves range extension has important implications for distributional shifts of temperate species into the Arctic and may in the future restructure hard bottom assemblages around Svalbard.

The main aim of this project is to investigate the blue mussel distribution, genetic trades and ecology on Svalbard. We will thoroughly survey of the West cost of Svalbard, which will serve as status quo of blue mussel occurrence for all further investigations. Strong focus is set to physiological processes such as growth and reproduction. Gonadal development will be studied on life specimen throughout the year to determine if local recruitment is currently possible or even present. Together with molecular tools (such as mtDNA and rRNA analysis), this will help understand why we now find blue mussels again in the area and what limitation factors they face in the high Arctic.

Start date: April 2014
Planned submission date: December 2018
