Master project title:
Effects of terrestrial inputs on community composition of softbottom benthos in Isfjorden, Svalbard.
Master project description:
Benthic community composition is determined by a variety of abiotic factors, which vary on regional and local scales. In Svalbard fjords, benthic communities are subject to a range of environmental conditions, ranging from disturbed inner basins where glacial melt water brings freshwater and heavy loads of sediments, to deep saline waters in the open fjord. Increased terrestrial run-off from a warming Arctic landscape is delivering freshwater and inorganic sediments (and associated nutrients and organic matter) to coastal areas, with implications for local benthic community structure and functioning. This MSc project focuses on benthic community distribution in Isfjord in relation to physical parameters of the water column and sediments. Soft-bottom macrofauna samples will be collected using a Van-Veen grab along inner to outer fjord transects in Billefjord, Tempelfjord and Adventfjord in the Isfjord fjordsystem and community composition will be analyzed in relation to abiotic factors.ThisMSc project is a part of the TerrACE project (NFR project from 2017–2021; PI: Amanda Poste, NIVA).
