PhD project title:
What sinks? Patterns and species composition of downward carbon export in a changing Arctic seasonal ice zone
Project description:
As the Arctic seasonal ice zone is experiencing rapid changes in thickness, drift and cover duration, subsequent changes are expected in the coupling between the ice and the pelagic realms. My PhD project will aim to track changes occurring on the species level in ice algae, phytoplankton and zooplankton and their relative contributions to vertical carbon export from the sea ice and under ice waters and out of the euphotic zone. Together with the other members of the Arctic SIZE project, we aim to get a comprehensive understanding of seasonal ice covered ecosystems in the northern Barents Sea and Svalbard region.
Start date: March 2017
