Research interests:

  • Zooplankton vertical distribution
  • Life cycles
  • Overwintering strategies and phenology
  • Biogeography.

Layers and aggregations of zooplankton in relation to environmental parameters. To what degree is vertical distribution affected by biological drivers; e.g. competition from transient species and predators, compared to physical parameters. Phenology and timing of life history event; overwintering strategies, timing of diapause (cont. of PhD). Biogeography of small copepods, especially Pseudocalanus sibling species. Plankton investigations in North Norwegian fjords, Arctic and Atlantic regions, where identifying distributions with the VPR is a vital part.

Completed national and international projects:

  • Pelagic ecosystems in ice-covered and ice-free fjords under climate change (Fram Centre, Coast & Sea Flagship, 2013-2015)
  • Analysis of Video Plankton Recorder Data, Iceland-Norway workshops (2014)
  • Pseudocalanus: ecology and taxonomy of two sibling copepod species in Svalbard and Northern Norwegian Waters (2009-2013)
  • The significance of thin layers in aquatic plankton communities (NRC, 2005.2009)
  • Autonomous VPR system. Vertically profiling video plankton recording system with simultaneous collection of CTD data and fluorescence (NRC, 2002-2004)
