The workshop is taking place January 30th to February 6th 2023, in conjunction with the Arctic Frontiers conference in Tromsø, and continues afterwards in Skjervøy, a small Arctic community north of Tromsø. As part of the workshop, participants have to attend the Arctic Frontiers conference and give a presentation (oral or poster) during the science section of the conference.

Note! Abstract submission deadline for the conference is September 26th – see: https://www.arcticfrontiers.com/arctic-frontiers-2023-moving-north/af2023-key-dates-and-deadlines/ – submitting an abstract is mandatory for all participants.

After the conference, the students will embark on a 4-day seminar to Skjervøy, during which they will learn about proposal writing and prepare a proposal for funding to an imaginary research grant. Students will in addition attend a series of lectures covering various other topics, e.g., pole iitical/social science, marine ecology and climate, and Arctic entrepreneurship during the entire workshop. In addition, the workshop will include cultural events, and visits to local research institutions and industries. The workshop focuses on Arctic marine ecology but aiming at a multidisciplinary approach and is thus also suitable for students from related scientific fields.

One main goal of the workshop is networking. During the conference and workshop, students can meet politicians, business people, and senior researchers as well as other early career scientists, who all share interest in Arctic topics. Together, the northern areas are facing possibilities and challenges related to the combination of climate change, globalization, and numerous issues related to oil and gas development, pollution, public health, reduced biodiversity, and loss of habitats. The need for action is enormous, and the challenges are complex. The idea behind this workshop is that the solution to the problems ahead lies in the synergy that emerges from international networks, cross-disciplinary cooperation, and dialogue.

PhD students are prioritized but Master students and post-docs may apply as well. The workshop is an official PhD level course (BIO-8516) at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø worth 4 ECTS (only PhD students can receive credits).

Travel support and reduced conference funding will be available for workshop participants.

Note! The realization of the workshop depends on external funding and a final decision if the workshop can take place will be made by the end of 2022.

Application deadline: September 26, 2022

Link to registration form: https://nettskjema.no/a/279490

For questions, contact arctos@bfe.uit.no

The ARCTOS research network invites PhD candidates to a student workshop offering an exciting program for early career scientists working on issues related to Arctic science.
