The 2016 ARCTOS PhD Forum took place on April 3-6 at Sommar\u00f8y Artic Hotel, an hour west of Troms\u00f8. In total seven PhD students, Melania Borit and a baby attended the meeting. The focus for this year\u2019s forum was to discuss life as a PhD student and which skills students should obtain during their PhD.<\/p>\n

On the first day, we had an interactive workshop on life as a PhD student, led by Melania Borit from the Norwegian College of Fisheries Science. The first part of the day went to imagining and discussing where our careers would be in three to five years and working in groups to pinpoint which steps should be taken to obtain these career goals. This provided us with a good framework and some concrete steps for career development within research and academia.<\/p>\n

The final session of the student forum workshop was enjoyed outside<\/p><\/div>\n

After lunch, we enjoyed the final workshop session outside in the sunny spring weather. This part of the workshop was centred on the different skills sets, attributes and behaviours a PhD student should learn and continue to work on as a future researcher. Using the \u201cResearcher Development Framework\u201d by \u201cVITAE – realising the potential of researchers\u201d we went through, discussed and came with examples for many of the skills we should learn and work on. A nice dinner and a trip to the sauna and Jacuzzi house ended this warm and sunny day.<\/p>\n

The second day started with a morning meeting to discuss the new format of the student forum, which is now combined with the Arctos Days. Everyone agreed that having the forum just prior to the Arctos Days is good, as it provides an opportunity to discuss different PhD school issues directly with the seniors and is a good place to network and socialize with others in the network. However, we wondered why there was a relatively low student attendance at the student forum this year and came with some suggestions for how to make it more interesting in the future. It was suggested that we divide the student forum into two parts, with a soft skill workshop on the first day while the second day involves activities directed related to thesis\/manuscript writing and professional development. It was also highlighted that in future Arctos forum and Days, we should be aware of any occurring courses for the dates planned, since this can highly influence attendance. Also, Sofia Aniceto (Akvaplan-Niva) and Marvin Choquet (Nord University) were elected as the new student representatives for the period of 2016 to 2017. Before the Arctos Days started in the late afternoon, we had time to go on a boat trip in the surrounding area. Steaming around the island H\u00e5ja which was inspiration for the shape of the Arctic Cathedral in Troms\u00f8, passing old settlements on neighbouring islands and spotting some sea eagles.<\/p>\n
