However, mechanistically, predation plays out very differently in the two worlds since in the microbial world viscosity impedes predator-prey contact, there is no vision to facilitate prey (and predator) perception, and observed behaviors are often counterintuitive. I will demonstrate how various groups plankton, from few micron-sized nanoflagellates to mm-sized copepods, have overcome the impeding effect of viscosity by a fascinating diversity of adaptations, and how microbial predators have balanced the fundamental problem of eating without themselves being eaten. The latter trade-off is a key ingredient in the trait-based models of pelagic ecosystems that have been developed at DTU during the past years.

The presentation will be rich in videos and animations.

14:55    Discussion & Coffee break

15:15    Student presentation (PhD candidate or master’s student, ARCTOS)  ‘tba’

16:00    End

Please reach out to arctos@bfe.uit.no if you have any questions about the event!

We are happy to announce a second ARCTOS Seminar in March, with a focus on microbial ecology!
